Richland County Names Columbia Housing Organization of the Month

Government and Community Services Division features Agency on Website

Columbia, South Carolina----Columbia Housing recently received a favorable nod from Richland County Government. Late last month agency CEO Ivory Mathews was informed that her affordable housing agency has been chosen to receive the County's special recognition for its hard work and service delivery to more than 16,000 Richland County residents.

The recognition reads "This month, GCS recognizes Columbia Housing Authority and their remarkable work within the community when it comes to promoting affordable housing and giving residents a chance to be more involved in their neighborhoods while promoting responsible homeownership. From free COVID-19 testing and vaccination sites for residents and staff, hosting Resident Executive Committee meetings, and promoting new developments, CHA has been a champion for residents in the County."

Mathews points out that she is proud of her team's commitment to improving the operational culture and delivery of services to Columbia Housing's families.  The County noted "the Resident & Family Services Department helps promote improved quality of life to help residents reach their full potential. Some of the services include financial counseling, adult basic education, job training, and resume writing, as well as assistance with Medicaid and Medicare enrollment." In addition, Columbia Housing offers 200+ ongoing workshops on financial literacy, expungement, credit restoration, parent-child communication, career opportunities, relationships building, and other subjects to improve the overall quality of life for residents. "We are also happy to see the County acknowledge the hard work of our Resident and Family Services Department. They are our frontline force engaging and empowering our residents," says Mathews.

In the recognition, the County also acknowledges the tough yet necessary decisions with which Columbia Housing is often faced-like relocating a host of families from an aging area Highrise. "Serving senior residents is paramount to CHA, particularly during this time of COVID-19. The Marion Street Highrise relocation project is one such case that has given seniors a chance to move into new apartments where they will be safer and enjoy a higher standard of living with modern amenities. By August 30, 2021, residential moves will be complete." For more information on the Marion Street Highrise Project, please visit https://www.columbiahousingsc.org/marion-street.

Columbia Housing is very proud to receive this special acknowledgment from the Richland County Government and Community Services Division. Whether it's our expanded efforts to give residents more of a voice through the Resident Executive Council; the increased use of technology to effectively communicate our messaging; or direct services to residents-Columbia Housing is honored to serve.
