Columbia Housing's Get-Out-The-Vote Campaign Wraps Up with a Parade to Drive Residents to the Polls

Columbia, SC-----To culminate its 12-week Columbia Housing Votes Campaign aka CH Votes-Columbia Housing will host a Get-Out-The-Vote Parade this Saturday October 31st at 3pm in the Latimer Manor public housing community at 100 Lorick Circle.   "We are excited to welcome participation from a host of community partners to include the City of Columbia and Richland County; Richland School District One School Board candidates; car and bike clubs; radio stations, local celebrities, and more. Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin and Columbia Housing Board Chairman Ernest W. Cromatie, III will serve as the parade's Grand Marshals," says Columbia Housing CEO Ivory Mathews.

The parade's staging area is the Hyatt Park Elementary School at 4200 Main Street, Columbia 29203. From Hyatt Park Elementary, the procession will head down the street to the Latimer Manor public housing community (a short 4 blocks away). Once at Latimer Manor, the parade will wind through the community which has a 'horse-shoe style' property layout that is very conducive for a socially distant-style parade.

The Get-Out-The-Vote Parade will kick off at 3 pm Saturday and wrap up around 4:30 pm. Residents have been asked to remain in their porch area during the procession. It is suggested that parade participants use megaphones to address parade onlookers.  Before the parade begins, Columbia Housing volunteers will deliver goodie bags with holiday treats and voting information for 500+ adults and children to the porches of each of the 200+ units.

The Columbia Housing Votes Campaign aka CH Votes has included voter registration, voter education and voter mobilization efforts over the last 12 weeks. As a result of the CH Votes Campaign , approximately 100 new voters were registered with the help of community partners; more than 400 people representing a host of community organizations participated in Zooming to the Polls-a weekly voter education virtual townhall series via the Zoom platform, and a partnership with The Comet bus system is providing complementary rides to the pools for Columbia Housing residents in need of transportation.
