Ask Congress to Fund Housing Choice Voucher Mobility Services & Administrative Fees

A Message From Columbia Housing's Chief Executive Officer, Ivory N. Mathews

The National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) kicks off WEEK 3 of its August Advocacy with an incredibly important topic: Housing Choice Voucher Services & Support and Columbia Housing is ALL IN! In the third week (August 16, 2021 - August 20, 2021) of NAHRO's August Advocacy campaign, NAHRO is calling on Congress and the White House to support the housing choice voucher program for funding for mobility services and administrative fees. Housing Choice Voucher Program support helps to streamline the program, retain landlords, and empower low-income families.

The administrative fees are crucial to helping families find homes with a housing voucher because they cover the costs of program operations. Public housing agencies use administrative fees to accomplish the following:

  • Completing unit inspections
  • Certifying tenant incomes
  • Managing waiting lists and applicants
  • Determining tenant eligibility
  • Briefing new families on the voucher program
  • Ensuring reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities

While fully funding the administrative fee account is crucial, it is only the minimum to support an effective housing choice voucher program. Congress should also provide $491 million in the FY 2022 Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) budget for mobility services. Mobility services may include any of the following:

  • Pre-move services
  • Housing search assistance
  • Family financial assistance
  • Landlord recruitment
  • Post-move services

In concert with NAHRO's August Advocacy efforts, Columbia Housing has activated a community-wide CH Advocates for Affordable Housing Campaign

The CH Advocates for Affordable Housing Campaign has set a goal of submitting 100 letters per week to Congress urging their support of allocating additional resources to address our local and national housing needs.
